The Evolution of Rural Tourism in Wuhan: Complexity and Adaptability

Abstract: The complex adaptation system (CAS) theory of “adaptability to produce complexity” is a new theoretical perspective for the spatio-temporal evolution of rural tourism systems. Based on the CAS theory, the theoretical framework, structural composition, formation process, and evolution mechanism of the rural tourism complex system were examined and revealed. The suburban country region of Wuhan was taken as the area of focus for empirical research. The state of the rural tourism destination system in Wuhan has g… Show more

“…AMPI is a composite index that allows data comparison across units and time, resulting in compatibility with the spatiotemporal approach. The choice of the AMPI method also corresponds to the characteristics of a tourism system that is complex, dynamic, and associated with many variables (Baggio, 2020;Lv et al, 2021) so that it cannot be measured by a single indicator (Mazziotta & Pareto, 2013;Mazziotta & Pareto, 2017;Scaccabarozzi et al, 2022).…”

“…Shin et al, (2017) stated rural tourism is one of the most paramount factors in driving economic growth in rural areas and provides many direct benefits to residents. Rural tourism is considered a breakthrough in overcoming numerous problems in rural areas and encouraging the sustainable development of rural communities (Neumeier & Pollermann, 2014;Lv et al, 2021).…”

“…In addition, there is no single definition of rural tourism (Tang, 2022). Further, the constant changes occurring in spatial patterns, service facilities, product types, development modes, and functional benefits of rural tourism systems (Lv et al, 2021) strengthen the complexity of this task.…”

“…One type of tourism that is increasing in various countries is rural tourism. Using natural resources, culture, and the way of life of rural residents as tourist attractions (Dimitrovski et al, 2012), rural tourism is considered capable of overcoming various problems in rural areas, such as limited job opportunities and high poverty (Markey et al, 2008;Lv et al, 2021). It is also considered to provide new kinetic energy in revitalizing rural areas (Neumeier and Pollermann, 2014).…”

“…The state of attention, nonetheless, is not only due to the preservation of the natural environment but also to the resilience of communities that inhabit areas far from large urban centers. Taking into account the unstable nature of agricultural activity [43], rural tourism contributes to the social, environmental, and economic evolution of these communities, providing them with the possibility to develop in a sustainable way [7,29]. Indeed, the promotion of tourism in small rural villages can favor the creation of jobs [44], the preservation of the historicalcultural and architectural heritage [1], the alleviation of poverty [45], and the enhancement of the local market [46], among other benefits.…”
