The Evolution of Reliability and Efficiency of Aerospace Bearing Systems

Abstract: The worldwide air traffic underwent a rapid development in recent decades. Between the early 70s and the late 90s of the last century civil air traffic doubled every 15 years. The civil aviation market will continue to grow with 4% -5% each year within the next 20 years. This enormous growth represents major challenges for airframers, engine makers, suppliers, airlines, air traffic management and ground infrastructure. In addition, the public debate on the worldwide civil air traffic is dominated by environmen… Show more

“…The high-speed roller bearing is the core of the main shaft supporting the structure of high-speed rotating machines like aero-engine, and its stable and reliable operation is crucial to ensure the normal operation of the entire engine [1]. With the improvement of the thrust-to-weight ratio and economy performance of aero-engines, the main-shaft rotating speed is also increasing, leading to a higher bearing DN (rotating speed (rpm) × inner diameter (mm)) value and larger bearing heat generation [2].…”

“…Considering its high rotating speed and high-temperature environment, a good lubrication state is a key factor for the bearing to maintain stable and long-term operation. Under-race lubrication is now increasingly employed for main-shaft roller bearings in modern gas turbine engines [2,3]. Different from traditional jet lubrication with one or several fixed nozzles outside the bearing, in under-race lubrication bearing, the oil is thrown into the bearing cavity by centrifugal force caused by a high-speed rotating shaft, through radial hollows in the inner ring [4].…”

“…In the case of the aerospace industry, it becomes a real issue because more complex thermal management systems need to be designed for the new generation of turbofans [16][17][18], so additional cooling systems have to be implemented, considering though that their impact should be minimum in terms of affecting the propulsive efficiency. In fact, companies are developing patented technologies in this respect [19,20] to improve the performance of UHBR turbofans.…”
