“…Emotion, as evidenced by frequent use of emotive words, featured in a third of the postcard responses, suggesting that an emotional attachment to the ocean, marine animals or a specific animal was a primary motivator for a positive response. The role of affective engagement in generating support for conservation in zoos and aquariums is documented (Ballantyne et al, 2011; Clayton et al, 2009; Skibins & Powell, 2013), however, its potential in building ocean literacy and communicating positively about MPAs has only recently been realized (McKinley & Burdon, 2020). Personal connections to the ocean and specific marine animals were evident in the postcard responses.…”
