Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) plants are native to Southeast Asia and are part of the Zingiberaceae family. Global consumption and production of this plant are expanding. In countries such as Colombia, turmeric is a promising cultivar. Curcuminoids derived from its rhizomes are used in food, pharmaceuticals, and natural cosmetics. Curcuminoids constitute approximately 3 wt% of the rhizome. Many residues rich in cellulose and starch can thus be recovered. This study characterizes a novel starch isolated from Colombian turmeric cultivars. The morphological parameters of the starch were determined using microscopic techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Proximate analysis and infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) were used to analyze the chemical composition, while physical analyses included thermal characterization, swelling power testing, solubility, water retention capacity, and colorimetry evaluation. The new starch granules were ellipsoidal in shape and ranged in diameter from 19.91 to 38.09. A trace amount of remaining curcumin was identified through chemical and physical characterization. The swelling power was 3.52 ± 0.30, and its water retention capacity was 3.44 ± 0.30. Based on these findings, turmeric can be useful in both food and non-food applications. Because starch was extracted from other Zingiberaceae plants, this study also includes a brief review of the related literature.

It is well known that many polymers are insulators with poor mechanical properties, which limit their use in fuel cell applications. Physicochemical properties of the polymers can be improved by adding conductive fillers. Carbon-based materials like graphite, which provides excellent mechanical strength and thermal conductivity to the polymer matrices, is of special interest because of its abundance, low cost and light weight when compared to other carbon allotropes. In the present work we describe the physicochemical properties of rooflite unsaturated polyester resin/graphite composites. Rooflite resin and three of its composites containing 1%, 3% and 5% of graphite by weight (C-2, C-3, and C-4, respectively) were synthesized and characterized by FTIR spectral data. XRD showed two peaks at 2q = 27.37°and 55.40° with d spacing value of 3.2559 nm and 1.6571 nm, respectively, indicating the change in degree of crystallinity of the composite. The calculated crystallinity for the resin is 7.3%, and for C-2, C-3 and C-4 its values are 12.1%, 14.3%, 17.1%, respectively, evidencing the interactions between the graphite and polymer matrix. The composites showed fractured surfaces and porous rough structure with randomly distributed vascularized cavities. Agglomeration occurs, when the concentration of graphite increases. The glass transition temperature for the pure resin is 65.9 °C and increases when the resin is filled with graphite. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of the composites showed no marked difference between Tmax and Tfinal, and LOI values of C-3 and C-4 are above 21%, making them self-extinguishable materials that could be used for making bipolar plates. The chemical resistance investigation against water, NaCl, NaOH, acetic acid, and toluene showed more resistance to acid than alkali solutions. These rooflite resin/graphite composites could be further studied to explore the possibility of making bipolar plates, which are an essential component of fuel cells.

Stable 3D Deep Convolutional Autoencoder Method for Ultrasonic Testing of Defects in Polymer Composites

Ultrasonic testing is widely used for defect detection in polymer composites owing to advantages such as fast processing speed, simple operation, high reliability, and real-time monitoring. However, defect information in ultrasound images is not easily detectable because of the influence of ultrasound echoes and noise. In this study, a stable three-dimensional deep convolutional autoencoder (3D-DCA) was developed to identify defects in polymer composites. Through 3D convolutional operations, it can synchronously learn the spatiotemporal properties of the data volume. Subsequently, the depth receptive field (RF) of the hidden layer in the autoencoder maps the defect information to the original depth location, thereby mitigating the effects of the defect surface and bottom echoes. In addition, a dual-layer encoder was designed to improve the hidden layer visualization results. Consequently, the size, shape, and depth of the defects can be accurately determined. The feasibility of the method was demonstrated through its application to defect detection in carbon-fiber-reinforced polymers.
