The Evaporation of Oil Spills: Development and Implementation of New Prediction Methodology

Abstract: Extensive experimentation was conducted on oil evaporation. The results of the regulation nature of oil evaporation experiments, show that oil is not strictly boundary-layer regulated specifically: (1) the evaporation rate of several oils with increasing wind speed shows that, unlike water, the evaporation rate does not change significantly except for the initial step over 0-level wind; (2) increasing area does not significantly change oil evaporation rate; (3) decreasing thickness does not increase oil evapor… Show more

“…Evaporation is considered one of the most important processes in an oil spill, once it controls the mass balance and can cause about 75% of lost mass according to [16]. Evaporation processes are linked to the wind velocity and the spill area.…”

“…The viscosity of such model oils is much lower than that of the real ocean crude-oil spills. In fact, even light crude-oil spill (1-100 mPa s) could experience a remarkable increase of viscosity within several hours of spill due to the evaporation of its light components and weathering effect [11]. On the other hand, the oil absorption rate by oil sorbents is highly dependent on the oil diffusion in the porous oil sorbents.…”

“…Environmental condition and oil type are crucial for determining the evaporation rate of oil. The evaporation process (%Eva) for the crude oil in this paper was modelled using Fingas [13] empirical formulation as follows:…”
