The Evaluation of Water Sorption/Solubility on Various Acrylic Resins

Abstract: ObjectivesThe absorption of water by acrylic resins is a phenomenon of considerable importance since it is accompanied by dimensional changes, a further undesirable effect of absorbed water in acrylic resins to reduce the tensile strength of the material. Solubility is also an important property because it represents the mass of soluble materials from the polymers.MethodsTen acrylic resin-based materials were evaluated: two heat cure acrylic resins (De Trey QC-20, Meliodent Heat Cure) and eight self cure acryl… Show more

“…The effects of NVP grafting on water sorption and solubility of the resulting resins were tested following the specifications of ISO (International Standards Organization) test method 1567 [52, 53]. The hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the grafted surfaces was evaluated using a VCA Optima contact angle analyzer.…”

“…Studies by Garcia et al and Monfrin et al confirm that the polymers based on PMMA are characterized by dimensional instability in changeable storage conditions. They are also characterized by water sorption . The self‐cured polymers are distinguished by a lower change in values than those that are heat‐cured, and this is connected with lower residual stress, which arises during processing.…”

“…[31] The hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the samples was evaluated with a VCA Optima contact angle analyzer (AST Products Inc., MA, USA) using the sessile drop technique. Reported water contact angles were the average of at least 5 measurements at different locations on the surface using 1 μL pure water drops.…”
