The Evaluation of Laser Application in Surgery: A Review Article

Abstract: There are several types of surgeries which use lasers in the operating room. Surgeons use lasers in general surgery or surgical specialties to cut, coagulate, and remove tissue. In modern medicine, the application of laser therapy is an attractive subject due to its minimal invasive effect. Today lasers are widely used in the treatment and diagnosis of many diseases such as various cancers, lithotripsy, ophthalmology, as well as dermatology and beauty procedures. Depending on the type of lasers, the wavelength… Show more

“…Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) is a major procedural endpoint leading to acceptable success rates in individuals with paroxysmal or persistent AF 2-4 . In addition to radiofrequency current energy and cryothermal energy, the diode laser was introduced as a new energy for PVI as various types of laser were used in many fields of surgery 5,6 . The following three evolving versions of laser balloon (LB) catheter are available for PVI at present 7-11 : the first‐generation LB (LB1; HeartLight; CardioFocus, Marlborough, MA, USA), the second‐generation LB (LB2; HeartLight Excalibur Balloon; CardioFocus), and the latest version, the third‐generation LB (LB3; HeartLight X3; CardioFocus).…”

“…Laser application in medicine has attracted many clinicians' attention in different fields. 15,16 Dermatologists by using different types of lasers solve diverse kinds of patients' problems. 17 In spite of the widespread applications of lasers in medicine, more investigation is needed to understand the molecular mechanism of laser irradiation on the human body.…”

“…Additionally, they have been well-established in metallurgical industry for welding and cutting of different metals [4,5]. Their implementation in many other aspects of everyday life is also well-known, including laser projectors, printers, pointers, lithography, micromachining, medical lasers for aesthetic purposes, surgery and dentistry, laser microscopy, elemental analysis of numerous materials/substances (including space exploration), and many other examples [6][7][8][9][10][11].…”
