ABSTRACT:The development of fish assemblage in a restored river backwater (Kurfürst backwater, Morava River, Czech Republic) was monitored over a six-year period from its restoration. The structure of fish assemblage remained similar throughout the years. Species richness of adult fish increased from twelve species during the restoration to 20 after it. Initially steady fish abundance (mean 52.3-98.1 inds/ha) and biomass (mean 5.8-7.6 kg/ha) increased significantly in 1999 five years after restoration (576.9 inds/ha and 23.3 kg/ha, respectively). The main resident species were pike Esox lucius, roach Rutilus rutilus, rudd Scardinius erythrophthalmus and perch Perca fluviatilis. High abundance of bleak Alburnus alburnus and chub Leuciscus cephalus was related to their spring spawning period. The structure of the 0+ fish assemblage was similar throughout the years, with chub and bleak prevailing during the restoration, and roach, chub and rudd after it. The number of 0+ species increased from seven to 17. The monitoring documented that the restoration could be considered as beneficial for the fish assemblage. Habitat development of the backwater is likely to influence its current value as a refuge, spawning site and nursery for local fish populations.

Specimens of invasive topmouth gudgeon, Pseudorasbora parva, from Šúr Pond (Bratislava, Slovakia) were examined to assess age and growth, and to determine whether this recently-established invasive population employs a less specialized ontogenetic trajectory than the specialized form typical of native and/or long-time established populations. Samples were collected in October 2004 (n=143). Standard length (SL) ranged from 18.16 mm to 67.57 mm (mean 32.56 mm), and eviscerated body weight ranged from 0.10 to 5.02 g (mean 0.63 g). Scale caudal diameter ranged from 0.52 to 2.42 mm (mean 1.08 mm). SL at which the scales started to form was estimated to be 1.58 mm. The population was represented with 5 age groups, from 0+ to 4+. Relative to other populations for which comparable data are available the recently-established population of topmouth gudgeon was found to mature at smaller size and at a younger age compared to native and/or long-time established populations (all specimens bigger than 25.0 mm SL, and 94% of specimens from the age group I were already mature).© Versita Sp. z o.o.

Several authors have provided biostratigraphic age constraints for those Miocene marine deposits. Bassant et al. (2005) identified the NN4 calcareous nannofossil biozone (late Burdigalian-early Langhian; Martini & Müller 1986) in the lower part of the marine succession on the eastern side of the Mut Basin. According to the same authors, the upper part of the same marine succession should be part of the NN5 biozone (Langhian). In the Mut-Ermenek Basin, Tanar and Gökçen (1990) identified marine deposits as young as Serravallian. Similar ages for the Miocene marine succession cropping out north of Ermenek were provided by Janson et al. (2010). These authors identified 3 chronostratigraphic units within the mainly carbonate marine sediments of the Ermenek area. The first chronostratigraphic unit, which includes the lowermost part of the marine succession, is poorly dated as the upper part of the NN4 calcareous nannofossil biozone (latest Burdigalian-early Langhian).
