The Euclidean model of measurement in Fechner's psychophysics

Abstract: Historians acknowledge Euclid and Fechner, respectively, as the founders of classical geometry and classical psychophysics. At all times, their ideas have been reference points and have shared the same destiny of being criticized, corrected, and even radically rejected, in their theoretical and methodological aspects and in their epistemological value. According to a model of measurement of magnitudes which goes back to Euclid, Fechner (1860) developed a theory for psychical magnitudes that opened a lively deb… Show more

“…A common notion from Euclidean Geometry [13] is that "things that coincide with one another are equal to one another." We link this to sustainability and effectiveness by arguing that sustainability is a phenomenon, which is embedded in or which coincides with effectiveness.…”

“…Physical fundamental measurement arguably dates back to Euclid (Michell, 2003;Zudini, 2011) and has been formalized through axioms most notably by Hölder (1901). Reese (1943) applied this axiomatic formalization to psychology (Guilford, 1954, pp.…”

“…Therefore, Mach's theory, although heavily inspired by the ''Identitätsansicht'' (''identity view'') of the German physicist, physician and philosopher Gustav Theodor Fechner (1801-1887), the founder of the discipline of psychophysics (see Zudini 2011, and, in a wider view on psychology, also Zudini 2009), represents an effective overcoming of it. Within a monistic conception, there is only one reality, that of sensations differing only in the system of links considered in any one particular moment (see Mach 1886, Engl.…”
