“…The EU released its Global Strategy in 2016, soon after the UK's Brexit vote, and amidst deep divisions between its members that were triggered by refugee inflows and the rise of populist nationalist parties. Recent assessments of the EU as a global actor explore the EU's role as either a diplomatic, security, trade or regional actor, or as a combination of these (Dinan et al ., ; Pomorska and Vanhoonacker, ; Novotna, ; Wallace, ; Wivel and Wæver, ). We argue that what is missing is a fresh assessment of the EU's normative role in the world, in the context of parallel global and regional challenges the EU is currently facing.…”
