The Etiology of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Death in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants: A Multicenter Survey in China

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study is to identify causes of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) death in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants less than 1,000 g admitted in Chinese tertiary NICUs. Study design We retrospectively collected data on 607 ELBW infants from 39 level III NICUs from July 2016 to June 2019. The primary causes of death were compared among different gestation age, postnatal age groups, and areas with variable economic status. Results Among all 607 ELBW NICU deaths, 4… Show more

“…BPD is an important medical condition that causes morbidity and mortality among very-low-birth-weight infants (4). It is affected by multiple factors, including antenatal, postnatal and genetic factors, such as maternal smoking, intrauterine growth restriction, intrauterine inflammation, mechanical ventilation, oxygen supplementation after birth, and cardiovascular malformation (22).…”

“…In some of these infants, worse cognitive and psychomotor development are also observed later in their development (6). We also considered death to be our outcome measure because death was a competing outcome with BPD (23) and BPD was a major cause of death (4). In this study, we developed and validated an easy-to-use nomogram as a new approach to diagnose BPD.…”

“…Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a severe pulmonary complication of prematurity, and the leading cause of post-neonatal death in extremely preterm infants in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) [ 1 , 2 ]. The current National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) consensus definition of BPD is based on oxygen requirement and clinically assessed need for supplementary respiratory support at 28 days postnatal age and 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) [ 3 ].…”

“…Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic neonatal lung disease with adverse effects on pre-mature infants. It is related to adverse long-term pulmonary and neurodevelopmental outcomes, especially in very low birth weight infants (VLBW) (1)(2)(3)(4). Over the past 50 years, unlike other complications affecting VLBW, there has been no substantial decrease in the incidence of BPD despite of improvements in neonatal care (5).…”
