Background“Kratom” refers to an array of bioactive products derived from Mitragyna speciosa, a tree indigenous to Southeast Asia. Most kratom consumers report analgesic and stimulatory effects, and common reasons for use are to address mental and physical health needs, manage pain, and to reduce use of other substances. Natural-history studies and survey studies suggest that many kratom consumers perceive benefits from those uses, but such studies are unlikely to capture the full range of kratom-use experiences.MethodsWe collected text data from Reddit posts from 2020-2022 to qualitatively examine conceptualizations, motivations, effects, and consequences associated with kratom use among people posting to social media. Reddit posts mentioning kratom were studied using template thematic analysis, which included collecting descriptions of kratom product types and use practices. Network analyses of coded themes was performed to examine independent relationships among themes, and between themes and product types.ResultsCodes were applied to 329 of the 370 posts that comprised the final sample; 134 posts contained kratom product descriptions. As Reddit accounts were functionally anonymous, demographic estimates were untenable. Themes included kratom physical dependence (tolerance, withdrawal, or use to avoid withdrawal), perceived addiction (net detrimental effects on functioning), and quitting. Extract products were positively associated with reports of perceived addiction, dependence, and experiences of quitting kratom. Many used kratom for energy and self-treatment of pain, fatigue, and problems associated with opioid and alcohol; they perceived these uses as effective. Consumers expressed frustrations about product inconsistencies and lack of product information.ConclusionAs in previous studies, kratom was deemed helpful for some and a hindrance to others, but we also found evidence of notable negative experiences with kratom products that have not been well documented in surveys. Daily kratom use may produce mild-moderate physical dependence, with greater severity being possibly more common with concentrated extracts; however, there are currently no human laboratory studies of concentrated kratom extracts. Such studies, and detailed kratom product information, are needed to help inform consumer decision-making.

This paper explores the intersection of disability and digital content creation on OnlyFans, a subscription-based social media platform known for its diverse creator community. Through a content analysis of 10 news articles and 22 Reddit threads focused on disability and OnlyFans, we investigate the experiences of disabled content creators in this dynamic digital landscape. OnlyFans has emerged as a promising employment option for people with disabilities, offering financial stability, independence, and a newfound sense of career control. However, concerns persist regarding potential impacts on disability-related benefits, highlighting the need for clearer support mechanisms. Furthermore, the platform has redefined power dynamics, allowing creators to reclaim agency over their narratives, particularly during the pandemic. It has not only transformed financial prospects but also served as a tool for managing health conditions and boosting self-confidence. These findings underscore OnlyFans’ role in fostering inclusivity and financial empowerment for disabled individuals. Our analysis also unveils broader societal challenges linked to disability and sexuality, including the de-sexualization and hypersexualization of disabled individuals. This emphasizes the urgency of cultivating a more inclusive understanding of sexuality and consent. Additionally, the fetishization of disabled people, termed “devotees,” adds complexity to the conversation, underlining the importance of respecting autonomy. By shedding light on this underexplored intersection, our research seeks to contribute to a more informed discourse on disability, digital content creation, and online platforms. Ultimately, it highlights the imperative of ongoing exploration and support for disabled content creators within the evolving digital landscape.

Constructing ambivalent masculinity and constant femininity in interracial families: Media representations of African-Chinese marriage on Xiaohongshu

Interracial marriage has increasingly gained visibility on Chinese social media platforms, especially African-Chinese marriage which has been popularly represented, sparking heated discussions publically. However, although several studies have touched upon interracial marriage with analyses through political and geographical lenses, few studies investigated the media representations and mediated comments towards African-Chinese marriage in China as it has become a hot topic on Chinese social media platforms recently. To fill this niche, this study explores how African-Chinese marriage is represented on Chinese social media through mediated public comments, and what ideological implication of represented subjectivity of male and female in African-Chinese marriage. Through feminist critical discourse analysis and intersectional perspective, it found that ambivalent masculinity and constant femininity are constructed in African-Chinese marriage through comments where Chinese males are predominantly represented as positive figures, while African men are greatly dehumanised and criticised. As for women, although public attitudes are distinctive towards Chinese and African women, they, sharing the collective identity of females, are restricted in the traditional conception of gender dichotomy. Finally, the social contextualisation of such representations and potential ideological implications will be generally discussed.
