“…where h is sea-ice thickness, is reflectance at the visible light/near-infrared band, which changes with sea-ice thickness, max is the reflectance corresponding to sea ice with infinite thickness, µ is the attenuation coefficient of reflectance and is a parameter associated with max and sea (Yuan and others, 2012). If the reflectance is completely derived from volume scattering of sea ice, then the accuracy of sea-ice thickness estimation by this model will be improved.…”

“…Ice thickness is one of the major components of remote-sensing monitoring. Based on Yang (2000), Luo and others (2004), Wu and others (2006) and Yuan and others (2012), the thickness of smooth sea ice can be inverted using the correlation of reflectance between ice thickness and visible/near-infrared (VNIR) reflectance. Rough ice surfaces increase the anisotropic scattering from incoming solar radiation, which distorts the correlation of reflectance between ice thickness and the VNIR spectrum.…”

“…This method is suitable for monitoring level-ice SIT in the Bohai Sea under cold weather conditions [41]. SIT can also be estimated using optical spectrometer data through the empirical relationships between sea ice reflectance spectra or albedo and SIT [42][43][44][45]. However, the resulting SIT estimates may have large errors due to impurities (sand, dissolved organic matter) in the Bohai Sea ice, which then reduce the surface albedo [46].…”

“…The region possesses only 2 % of the water resources in China, and the annual per capita water consumption is less than 350 m 3 ). In the search for new freshwater resources to solve the water stress situation, researchers have demonstrated through numerous studies, beginning in 1995, that sea ice can be treated as a new freshwater resource (Shi et al 2002;Li et al 2007Li et al , 2013Gu et al 2012Gu et al , 2013Yuan et al 2012). The desalination of sea ice will ease the freshwater resource deficiencies in the Bohai Rim (Lin et al 2010).…”
