This review summarizes selected scientific evidence on phytochemistry and pharmacological properties of Ammodaucus leucotrichus. Information was gathered via the Internet (using Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, Elsevier, Springer, Science Direct, Researchgate and Web of Science) as well as from libraries and local books. Ammodaucus leucotrichus (A. leucotrichus), belongs to the family Apiaceae, has been reported to possess a wide range of traditional medicinal uses including in diarrhea, cough, pulmonary diseases, anorexia, allergy, tachycardia, helminthiasis, stomach pain, gastralgias, otitis, indigestion, cold, fever, anorexia and cardiac diseases. Phytochemical investigations revealed that this plant possesses many bioactive chemical constituents including monoterpenes and their derivatives, sesquiterpenes and their derivatives, tannins, anthracenes compounds, sterols, triterpenes, reducing compounds, alkaloids, phenol acids, saponins, flavonoids and coumarins. The most important pharmacological activities are antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticholinesterase and cytotoxicity activities. Ammodaucus leucotrichus has potential for the treatment of a wide range of diseases and has been well studied for its phytochemical properties. However, further scientific studies are needed to explore mechanisms of actions, adverse effects of the extracts, toxicity and the therapeutic effect of major secondary metabolites.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) has encouraged science to find plants or biologic compounds which can be utilized for prophylaxis of AD. Heliotropium genus is presented by 16 taxa in Turkey and they contain pyrrolizidine alkaloids, and certain are known to have antioxidant and anticholinesterase activities. The paper displays the anticholinesterase and antioxidant capacities of the aerial parts lyophilized aqueous extracts of H. dolosum, H. lasiocarpum and H. hirsutissimum. Phenolic contents and antioxidant activity of examples were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu's, qualitative/quantitative DPPH and TBA. Anticholinesterase activity was assessed by Ellman's method. The total phenolic content of H. lasiocarpum extract was found the highest (738.39 mg/g), however the total phenolic content of H. dolosum extract was found the lowest (122.731 mg/g). Every example indicated that antioxidant activity with DPPH test and H. lasiocarpum presented the highest activities (69.99 μg/mL). Furthermore, the H. lasiocarpum extract indicated considerable inhibition towards acetylcholinesterase (5.90%) and butyrylcholinesyterase (24.04%) enzymes. These findings suggest that these Heliotropium species can be effective for pharmaceutic products that achieve anticholinesterase and antioxidant activities.

In a continuation of our previous work for the exploration of novel enzyme inhibitors, molecular modeling was used to inspect the binding mode of perillaldehyde and D-limonene, the major compounds of essential oil of Algerian Ammodaucus leucotrichus into the active site pocket of cholinesterase (AChE and BuChE) and Monoamine Oxidase (MAO). The molecular docking was carried out using Molecular Operating Environment (MOE) software package. Docking analysis showed that this compounds (perilladehyde and D-limonene) can interact with both the Catalytic Active Site (CAS) of AChE, BuChE and MAO. For D-limonene, molecular docking showed favorable H-phi interaction with catalytic residue of AchE and BuChE. The perillaldehyde showed best interaction profile with BuChE as compared with compound D-Limonene. The best interaction between perilladehyde and monoamine oxidase was also revealed. This paper shows best correlation between the in vitro study and the in silico molecular docking study of anti-cholinesterase and anti-monoamine oxidase activities.
