The eSMAF: a software for the assessment and follow-up of functional autonomy in geriatrics

Abstract: Background: Functional status or disability forms the core of most assessment instruments used to identify mix and level of resources and services needed by older adults who possess common characteristics. The Functional Autonomy Measurement System (SMAF) is a 29-item scale measuring functional ability in five different areas. It has been recommended for use for home care, for allocation of chronic beds, for developing care plans in institutional settings and for epidemiological and evaluative studies. The SMA… Show more

“…The participants' clinical profiles are presented in Table 1 . Disability scores on the SMAF scale [ 22 ] varied from -19 to -40 (mean -32.4 ± 8.4 on a total of -87) and were linked to physical impairments secondary to stroke, lower limb fracture, amputation and immobilization syndrome. In all the patients, the use of a walker was needed to perform their daily activities.…”

“…Participants were evaluated prior to the beginning of the observations using a battery of standardized clinical tests that included variables such as functional autonomy (SMAF) [ 22 ], balance (Berg) [ 23 ], Timed-up-and-go (TUG) [ 24 ], and the 5m-Walk test [ 25 ]. The SMAF (Functional Autonomy Measurement System) is designed for clinical use in connection with a home support program or for admission and monitoring of clients in geriatric services and residential facilities.…”

“…For every item that has a rating of 1 or higher (i.e., not independent), the human resources (help or supervision) required to support the level of disability in this specific area and the stability of these resources were evaluated. The SMAF must be administered by a trained health professional (time approximately 40 min in total), who scores the individual after obtaining the information by questioning the subject and proxies or by observing [ 67 ]. A test–retest analysis of the ADL scale in the clinical version revealed a Cohen’s Kappa of 0.74, inter-rater reliability Cohen’s kappa of 0.81 and ICC of 0.96 (CI 0.92–0.97) [56].…”

“…Contrairement à la grille AGGIR, tous les items du SMAF servent à établir le profil Iso-SMAF. Un logiciel appelé eSMAF ® [14] : -permet la saisie de l'évaluation ; -fournit automatiquement le profil Iso-SMAF ; -génère un tableau d'accompagnement individualisé (TAI) qui illustre, par un code couleur, les incapacités de la personne et le niveau d'aide requis.…”
