The ESA Hera Mission: Detailed Characterization of the DART Impact Outcome and of the Binary Asteroid (65803) Didymos

Abstract: Hera is a planetary defense mission under development in the Space Safety and Security Program of the European Space Agency for launch in 2024 October. It will rendezvous in late 2026 December with the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos and in particular its moon, Dimorphos, which will be impacted by NASA’s DART spacecraft on 2022 September 26 as the first asteroid deflection test. The main goals of Hera are the detailed characterization of the physical properties of Didymos and Dimorphos and of the crater made b… Show more

“…The scientific interest in the Didymos system has increased in recent years due to the fact that it has been selected as the target of the NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART; Rivkin et al 2021) and Hera (Michel et al 2022) missions. DART will be the first mission to demonstrate the applicability of the kinetic impactor method for planetary defense (Cheng et al 2018).…”

“…Both DRACO cameras and LEIA and LUKE will provide substantial geological information on the Didymos system before the arrival of the ESA Hera spacecraft (Michel et al 2022), which will characterize in detail the post-impact geology of the system. Hera will launch in 2024 to rendezvous with Didymos in 2026 and fully characterize the asteroid system, including the mass and volume of Dimorphos and the outcome of the DART impact (crater size and morphology).…”

“…Later, the Hera mission (scheduled to be launched in 2024 October by the European Space Agency, ESA) will measure the mass of Dimorphos to better than 10% during its rendezvous with the Didymos system in 2027. Hera will further refine the value of β, analyze in detail the properties and internal structure of Dimorphos, as well as assess the size and morphology of the crater left by DART (Michel et al 2022).…”
