Like humans, domestic pigs are omnivorous and thus are a common model for human masticatory function. Prior attempts to characterize food-tooth interactions and jaw movements associated with mastication have been limited to aspects of the oral apparatus that are visible externally (with videography) and/or to 2D movements of oral structures (with monoplanar videofluoroscopy). We used XROMM, a 3D technique that combines CT-based morphology with biplanar videofluoroscopy, to quantify mandibular kinematics, tooth occlusion and mandibular condylar displacements within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) during feeding. We observed that the pig TMJ moved detectably in only three of six possible degrees of freedom during mastication: two rotations, pitch and yaw; and one translation, protraction-retraction. Asymmetrical yaw around a dorsoventral axis produced the observed alternating left-right chewing cycles responsible for food reduction. Furthermore, the relative motions of the upper and lower premolars contained a substantial mesiodistal component in addition to the buccolingual component, resulting in an oblique (rather than a strictly transverse) power stroke. This research demonstrates the capacity of XROMM to explore the kinematic underpinnings of key masticatory movements, such as the occlusal power stroke, by integrating tooth, joint and rigid body jaw movements. XROMM also allowed us to test kinematic hypotheses based on skeletal anatomy with actual kinematics observed during naturalistic feeding behaviors. We observed that the soft tissue structures of the TMJ appear to play a significant role in limiting the range of motion of a joint, and thus analyses based solely on osseous morphology may over-estimate joint mobility.

Carga imediata sobre implantes osseointegráveis para ancoragem ortodôntica: estudo em minipigs

DEDICATÓRIA Resumo RESUMOO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a taxa de sucesso, a quantidade de perda óssea em altura e a interação osso/implante para três diferentes protocolos: 1) implantes osseointegráveis mantidos sem carga durante período de reparo de 120 dias; 2) implantes submetidos a interferências oclusais; e 3) implantes que receberam carga imediata para ancoragem ortodôntica. Foram utilizados doze minipigs BR-1, nos quais foram instalados 70 implantes osseointegráveis de titânio (3,75mm diâmetro x 8,50mm comprimento), divididos em 5 grupos: Grupo 1 (n=12), implantes sem carga sepultados na mesial de caninos; Grupo 2 (n=6), implantes sem carga em áreas de extração; Grupo 3 (n=12), implantes expostos a interferências oclusais; Grupo 4 (n=20), implantes submetidos à carga ortodôntica imediata; Grupo 5 (n=20), implantes instalados em áreas de extração e submetidos à carga ortodôntica imediata. Ao término do período experimental, os animais foram eutanasiados e biópsias da região de interesse coletadas. Realizou-se avaliação clínica para estabelecer a porcentagem de sucesso (Teste Exato de Fisher), análise radiográfica para quantificar a perda óssea em altura (programa de análise de imagens KS300-Zeiss®, ANOVA) e análise histológica para descrever as características da interface osso/implante. A análise dos dados demonstrou: 1) Grupos 1, 2, 4 e 5 -taxa de sucesso, quantidade de perda óssea em altura e interação osso/implante semelhantes; 2) Grupo 3 -taxa de insucesso e quantidade de perda óssea significantemente maiores que os demais grupos, além de apresentar ausência de interação osso/implante. Os resultados clínicos, radiográficos e histológicos revelados nos grupos submetidos à carga ortodôntica imediata em relação aos grupos sem carga demonstraram que a perda óssea na região da crista óssea periimplantar é aceitável e não compromete a estabilidade clínica dos implantes.Desta forma, a utilização de carga imediata para ancoragem em Ortodontia não prejudica a posterior utilização desses implantes para a reabilitação protética, objetivo primário da indicação deste protocolo. Estudos clínicos prospectivos são necessários para comprovar estes dados. The miniature pig is a useful large laboratory animal model. Various tissues and organs of miniature pigs are similar to those of humans in terms of developmental, anatomical, immunological, and physiological characteristics. The oral and maxillofacial region of miniature pigs is often used in preclinical studies of regenerative dentistry. However, there is limited information on the dentition and tooth structure of miniature pigs. The purpose of this study was to examine the time-course changes of dentition and tooth structure (especially the root) of the miniature pig mandibular cheek teeth through X-ray analyses using soft X-ray for twodimensional observations and micro-CT for three-dimensional observations. The mandibles of male Clawn strain miniature pigs (2 weeks and 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 14, 17, and 29 months of age) were used. X-ray analysis of the dentition of miniature pig cheek teeth showed that the eruption pattern of the miniature pig is diphyodont and that the replacement pattern is vertical. Previous definitions of deciduous and permanent teeth often varied and there has been no consensus on the number of teeth (dentition); however, we found that three molars are present in the deciduous dentition and that four premolars and three molars are present in the permanent dentition. Furthermore, we confirmed the number of tooth roots and root canals. We believe that these findings will be highly useful in future studies using miniature pig teeth.
