The equilibrium liquidus temperatures of rhenium–carbon, platinum–carbon and cobalt–carbon eutectic alloys

Abstract: The eutectic alloys rhenium-carbon, platinum-carbon and cobalt-carbon have been proposed as reference standards for thermometry, with temperature and uncertainty values specified within the mise en pratique of the definition of the kelvin. These alloys have been investigated in a collaboration of eleven national measurement institutes and laboratories. Published results reported the point-of-inflection in the melting curve with extremely low uncertainties. However, to be considered as standards it is necessary… Show more

“…This approach is expected to have competitive uncertainties compared to ITS-90 above 1300 K and will facilitate direct linkage to the kelvin definition. This work builds on earlier work where low uncertainty values for the HTFPs of Co-C (~1597 K), Pt-C (~2011 K) and re-C (~2747 K) were determined [34,36,37].…”

“…Additionally, the components and uncertainties herein are based upon the most studied HTFP cells, namely Co-C, Pt-C and Re-C. To compile this list of uncertainties and their values we relied heavily on work done in establishing definitive melting temperatures as part of the CCT WG-NCTh/InK project, which is summarised in [4], [7], [8], [9].…”

“…The uncertainty in the liquidus temperature should be taken as the difference between the upper-limit and point-of-inflection temperatures divided by 2 √ 3. In [8], this amounted to, on average, 0.024 K, 0.044 K and 0.069 K for Co-C, Pt-C and Re-C, respectively, although values can be calculated for each individual plateau. These values are taken to be both the best and normal uncertainties.…”

“…The high temperature blackbody is a Re-C eutectic fixed point cell which has been fully characterised in previous papers [19,20] as well as thermal gradients coming from the furnace and the cell design. In this paper, the temperature of the Re-C blackbody was fixed slightly above (2760 K) the liquidus temperature (2748 K) thanks to a feedback-loop reacting on the supply current of the oven electrical heater.…”
