Crystallization by evaporation of aqueous solutions in nature is the start of the geochronological clock for evaporites such as sulfates (gypsum and anhydrite), halite (NaCl) and nahcolite (NaHC03 ). Development of deserts can be studied by ESR dating of these evaporite minerals (e.g., desert rose).
