The epidemiology of Plasmodium falciparum malaria in two Cameroonian villages: Simbok and Etoa.

Abstract: Abstract. In support of ongoing immunologic studies on immunity to Plasmodium falciparum, demographic, entomologic, parasitologic, and clinical studies were conducted in two Cameroonian villages located 3 km apart. Simbok (population ϭ 907) has pools of water present year round that provide breeding sites for Anopheles gambiae, whereas Etoa (population ϭ 485) has swampy areas that dry up annually in which A. funestus breed. Results showed that individuals in Simbok receive an estimated 1.9 and 1.2 infectious b… Show more

“…Because of the high rate of malaria transmission in Etoa, children acquire antibodies to many asexual-stage antigens by the time they reach 5 years of age (36). Thus, we determined if the proportion of individuals with antibodies (i.e., percent responders) to AMA1, MSA2, and MSP1-190L increased with age.…”

“…In 1995, a cross-sectional study was conducted in the rural village of Etoa, Cameroon. Etoa is a village of ϳ485 individuals where P. falciparum malaria is holoendemic (36). Malaria transmission is perennial with an estimated 2.4 infectious bites per night during each of the two rainy seasons and 0.4 infectious bites per night during the two dry seasons (36).…”

“…Malaria transmission is perennial at both sites, but it is considerably lower in urban Yaounde (entomological inoculation rate, 0.1 to 1.1/month) (15) than in rural Etoa (EIR, 0.4 to 2.4/day) (24). The study sites and populations have been described in detail elsewhere (33).…”

“…Malaria is prevalent throughout Cameroon with transmission being affected by climate and geography [1,2], increased drug resistance and the lack of adequate vector control measures [3]. Reduction in man-vector contact may be achieved by the use of protective clothing, insect repellents, bed nets, insecticides or environmental management.…”
