“…This finding contrasts with data from England and Finland where RBC use increased beginning around age 50 34,35 and where patients 70 to 80 years old had an eightfold higher RBC use than 20‐ to 40‐year‐old patients 34 . In Spain, the majority of RBCs were transfused in patients 65 years or older 7,29 and the median age for the RBC recipients in England and North Wales was 69 28 . These differences likely reflect the epidemiologic blood recipient profile across different countries and may also highlight the fact that the Central Institute is a tertiary care hospital and trauma center.…”

“…The mean age at the time of transfusion in São Paulo was 49 years, a younger age than in developed countries where the mean age varies from 60 to 69 years old 9,10,25,28‐30 . While in developed countries 60% to 70% of the blood recipients are more than 60 years old, 7,9,28 at the HC in São Paulo, 70% of the transfused patients were less than 65 years old, with 47% being less than 45 years of age.…”

“…RBCs and FFP were preferably needed in surgical disciplines while PTL were more used in hematology/oncology. Patients with hematology/oncology treatment and cardiac/thoracic surgery did not only need the highest numbers of transfusion units but also received the most intensive hemotherapies, specified as blood products per person [12,19,23]. These findings could PBM initiative and started with first priority a retrospective status quo analysis of the flow of blood components within our institution.…”

“…Transplantation medicine, adverse effects of intensive chemotherapies, treatment of diseases with acute or chronic disturbance of the blood coagulation, and extensive operations may be some of the reasons for this difference [11,12,23]. More than the half of our transfusion-related costs are due to PTL transfusions.…”
