The epidemiology and natural history of primary biliary cirrhosis

Abstract: The incidence and prevalence figures of PBC in Iceland are among the highest reported and have been stable over the last two decades. The prognosis of patients in this population-based cohort is better than that previously reported.

“…The Icelandic study used the WHO World Standard Population [42] , and that choice had a large impact on incidence estimates -even larger than what we showed for AIH in figure 1 . Before standardization, the incidence in Iceland was 2.4 per 100,000 during 1991-2000 and 3.4 during 2001-2010; after standardization, they were 2.0 and 2.5 per 100,000, respectively [42] . The explanation is that PBC is very much a disease of old age -more so than AIH -and the Icelandic population is older than the WHO World Standard Population.…”
