Cross-polarization isolation is one of the key engineering parameters for a polarimetric radar system. Previous studies focused more on the calibration of cross-talk contamination. This paper presents a numerical evaluation of the requirement for cross-polarization isolation from the data users' perspective, i.e., the quantitative impact of polarization cross talk on polarimetric target decomposition and the associated applications such as classification and detection. Sensitivity analyses of several commonly used target decomposition parameters suggest that a theoretical lower bound of À32 dB isolation level is preferred to avoid any significant impact on these parameters. Our analyses with both simulated and real synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data show that a level of À25 dB would be acceptable for general terrain surface classification. This requirement is also true for man-made target detection application. Using simulated SAR images of man-made targets in natural environment, sensitivity analyses on two polarimetric detectors, Yang and Marino, both suggest that target detection performance would break down rapidly if isolation deteriorates from À25 dB to À20 dB.

Polarimetric calibration intercalibrating the polarisation channels of the radar system results in a better characterisation of the target and of the backscattering mechanisms. However, system distortion because of miscalibration may affect the classification performance to some extent. The study described in this article is an attempt at deriving the polarimetric calibration requirements on several algorithms for the classification of land features. In the monostatic backscattering case, the model representing the effects of the residual distortion of the calibrated polarimetric data is presented first, followed by analysing the effects of miscalibration on a few commonly used polarimetric parameters and several classification schemes. Experimental results show that polarimetric calibration requirements not only are strongly dependent on classification methods but also directly relate to the underlying physical scattering mechanisms of the observables. For each classification algorithm under study, a set of numbers summarising the polarimetric calibration goals concludes this study.

Doppler centroid frequency is an essential parameter in the imaging processing of the Scanning mode Synthetic Aperture Radar (ScanSAR). Inaccurate Doppler centroid frequency will result in ghost images in imaging result. In this letter, the principle and algorithms of Doppler centroid frequency estimation are introduced. Then the echo data of ScanSAR system is analyzed. Based on the algorithms of energy balancing and correlation Doppler estimator in the estimation of Doppler centroid frequency in strip mode SAR, an improved method for Doppler centroid frequency estimation in ScanSAR is proposed. The method has improved the accuracy of Doppler centroid frequency estimation in ScanSAR by zero padding between burst data. Finally, the proposed method is validated with the processing of ENVIronment SATellite Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ENVISAT ASAR) wide swath raw data.
