In this article, poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) sandwich-structured hybrid composites with amorphous calcium carbonate and wood-filled cores were obtained by compression molding. It has been determined that wood addition up to a weight ratio of 33% reported to the total filler amount is beneficial in improving both the inter-filler and filler-matrix interfacial adhesion, which alongside with the promoting of the amorphous PVC matrix crystallization is responsible for an increase up to 34% in the flexural strength of the composites, compared to unfilled PVC. The hybrid filled composites present up to 35% lower friction coefficients and up to 20% higher Brinell hardness values than the composites filled with calcium carbonate alone. Subsequently, wood addition determines an increase in the oxidation onset temperature for PVC and an increase with up to 20% in the sound and thermal-insulative properties of the composites, compared to unfilled PVC. The dominating dispersive part of the composites surface energy aids in improving the mass and dimensional stability of the assembly to both water and dilute hydrochloric acid aqueous solutions. This study concentrated on the thermal aging mechanism and lifetime of a carbon fiber laminated epoxy composite. Samples of the laminated composite and the neat resin (as a contrast) were exposed in air circulating ovens set at 90, 120, and 150 C for various periods of time up to 13 days. The flexural properties combining with FTIR, weight loss, DSC, SEM, and surface morphology analyses were performed on the unaged and aged samples. The flexural strength of the composite deteriorated by a factor of 3 as a result of weight loss, microcrack formation, and chain scissions. The two-way ANOVA results indicated that the aging time had significant effect on the flexural strength of the composite and the aging temperature had no significant effect on it. Two statistical models were established to predict the residual flexural strength and lifetime of this composite. POLYM.

Experiments were carried out on three different types of varying mass density E glass fiber layers with epoxy matrix for the composite laminates. First set of laminates were reinforced with layers of 200gsm (grams per square meter) woven glass fibers, second set with layers of 360gsm woven glass fibers and the third set with layers 200gsm sandwiched between 360 gsm woven glass fibers. The matrix used in this investigation is epoxy amine system processed by infrared and thermal curing methods. Infrared and thermal curing was accomplished by a custom made infrared and thermal processing chamber, mounted with infrared heater operating in the wavelength range of 3 to 8micrometers. Thermo mechanical properties of the infrared cured composite laminates in comparison with thermal cured laminates. The values thus obtained help the designers in understanding the reinforcement combination of glass fiber layers of varying gsm (thickness) in order to taylor make the properties according to the required thickness of the laminate or maintain the optimum thickness of the final product without compromising the mechanical properties. Finally the properties of Infrared cured composites are comparable or even better than the thermal cured composites. Infrared curing method has resulted in the curing time reduction by 40percent. The combination of varying 360 and 200 gsm woven glass fiber layers has resulted in values lying between those of 360 and 200 gsm laminates.
