The Enhancement of Ammonia Pretreatment on the Fermentation of Rice Straw Hydrolysate to Xylitol

Abstract: In xylitol fermentation from rice straw hydrolysate by Candida tropicalis As2.1776, ammonia steeping was employed to pretreat the rice straw. Experimental results showed that the content of toxic compounds created in the hydrolysis process, such as acetic acid and phenolic compounds, was greatly reduced and the fermentation of the hydrolysate was enhanced. Xylitol fermentation was investigated in flasks and a 2-L bioreactor, respectively. The xylitol yield factor and volumetric productivity were 0.746 g/g and … Show more

“…The 1st internode of E. arundinaceus had a high lignin content, higher than those of small gramineous plants [e.g., 6.4-19.0% in rice straws (Deng et al 2007;Hattori et al 2012;Jin and Chen 2006;Sangnark and Noomhorm 2004;Suzuki et al 2009), 5.3-17.9% in wheat straws (Hongzhang and Liying 2007;Papatheofanous et al 1998;Saha et al 2005;Xu et al 2006), and 15-21% in corn Kim and Ralph (2010). Abbreviations are defined in Table 4. stover (Buranov and Mazza 2008)].…”

“…Lignin contents determined by the two methods gave almost identical values. e 1st internode of E. ravennae had a high lignin content, higher than those of small gramineous plants [e.g., 6.4-19.0% in rice straws (Sangnark and Noomhorm 2004;Jin and Chen 2006;Deng et al 2007;Suzuki et al 2009;Hattori et al in press), 5.3-17.9% in wheat straws (Papatheofanous et al 1998;Xu et al 2006;Saha et al 2005;Hongzhang and Liying 2007), and 15-21% in corn stover (Buranov and Mazza 2008)]. e lignin content was similar to that in other large gramineous plants [e.g., 17.4-28.5% in Miscanthus (Higuchi et al 1967a;Ververis et al 2004), and 19.5-36.0% in switchgrass (Hurter 1997;Madakadze et al 1999;Law et al 2001)].…”
