The energy distribution of localized states in polystyrene, based on isothermal discharge measurements

Abstract: The energy distribution of localized states in monodisperse polystyrene (37000 MWt) has been studied by observing the detrapping of electrons from the polymer. The states are populated by means of an electron beam. A 2.2 kV beam is used to inject a short pulse of charge into the free surface of a thin film of the polymer and a second electron beam monitors the surface potential of the film. The surface potential is proportional to trapped charge density, and the time derivative of the potential is a measure of… Show more

“…Detrapping kinetics may become the main factor determining ISPD in the case that transit time of charge carriers is lower than their mean detrapping time especially when the electric field is high. Then we can explain the ISPD in the view of energy [28]. Although some literature interpreted ISPD in the perspective of energy, the classification of the traps and the distinction between electron/hole carriers still need further research.…”

“…According to Eq. (19) and (20), this leads to ϕ PF ≈ 172 for T = 300 K and then to κ ≈ 0.12. The last value is smaller than the expected one, but the corresponding plot is in rough agreement with data for t > t T (Fig.…”

“…These models are more or less refined, considering for instance the absence of trapping [8][9][10][11][12][13], partial trapping [4], deep trapping [15,17], or the presence of space-charge in the sample [10,18]. Original interpretations have also been given thanks to so-called demarcation energy models [19,20] or in terms of surface detrapping [5].…”
