The Endometrium as a Source of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Regenerative Medicine1

Abstract: Stem cell therapies have opened new frontiers in medicine with the possibility of regenerating lost or damaged cells. Embryonic stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, and mesenchymal stem cells have been used to derive mature cell types for tissue regeneration and repair. However, the endometrium has emerged as an attractive, novel source of adult stem cells that are easily accessed and demonstrate remarkable differentiation capacity. In this review, we summarize our current unde… Show more

“…As an alternative source of human stem cells, the newly identified MenSCs exhibit their potential for ASC‐based therapy. Due to the natural high richness and non‐invasive sample collection, MenSCs display tempting features as replacement of bone marrow‐derived stem cells .…”

“…Further, down‐regulation of Let‐7 miRNAs has been reported in breast tumour‐initiating cells (BT‐IC), and restoration of Let‐7 in these cells caused reduced proliferation and mammosphere formation in vitro as well as tumour formation and metastasis in NOD/SCID mice . We, previously identified stem cells in endometrium and endometriosis . It will be interesting to see whether Let‐7 also regulates stem cells in endometriosis in a similar manner to regulation of BT‐IC in breast cancers.…”

“…38 We, previously identified stem cells in endometrium and endometriosis. [39][40][41] It will be interesting to see whether Let-7 also regulates stem cells in endometriosis in a similar manner to regulation of BT-IC in breast cancers. In our model, ER-α expression was more strongly suppressed than ER-β with Let-7b miRNA suggesting that Let-7 blocks oestrogen stimulation in the treatment of endometriosis.…”

“…Adjacent to the blood vessels exhibit pericytic characteristics. (Masuda, Anwar, Buhring, Rao, & Gargett, ; Mutlu et al., ; Schwab & Gargett, ; Spitzer et al., ). Our immunofluorescence study demonstrates that perivascular compartment in pig endometrium may constitute a major source of candidate mesenchymal stem/progenitor cells due to the presence of typical set of MSC markers in resident cells.…”

“…Evidence indicates that endometrial stem cells may have a roles in the development and progression of human proliferative disorders such as endometriosis and endometrial cancers (Gargett et al., ). On the other hand, the endometrial‐derived stem‐like cells are a promising source of therapeutic cells due to their high regenerative potential, angiogenic and immunomodulatory activities, and easy availability by endometrial biopsies (Mutlu, Hufnagel, & Taylor, ; Verdi, Tan, Shoae‐Hassani, & Seifalian, ). Hence, advancing our knowledge of the stem cells and their niches is important for better understanding of the mechanisms of endometrial homeostasis and pathology.…”
