The Endocrinology of Puberty and Reproductive Functioning in Female Cotton-Top Tamarins (Saguinus Oedipus) under Varying Social Conditions1

Abstract: Sexual maturation and fertility were assessed in fourteen cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) females under various social conditions. Six tamarin females (20-28 mo of age) showed a suppression of fertility while living with their families. Hormonal profiles demonstrated low, acyclic levels of urinary luteinizing hormone (LH) and estrone-conjugates (E1C). A rapid onset of ovarian and pituitary cyclicity occurred when four of the six females were removed from their families and paired with an unrelated male. … Show more

“…These dominant females are usually the only females in their social groups to exhibit circulating or excreted hormonal levels indicative of ovulatory ovarian cycles (S. fuscicollis (7), S. oedipus (6,8) and C. jacchus (5,9)). These findings have suggested a close relationship between female dominance status and fertility in these non-human primates.…”

“…Intra-and interassay coefficients of variation for the LH RIA were 71% and 8-5% (n = 6) respectively and for monkey CG RIA were 4-3% and 9-4% (n = 8) respectively. Urinary oestrone conjugates were measured directly from the samples by the method described by Ziegler et al (1987b). The sensitivity of the oestrone conjugates assay was 13 pg/tube.…”
