Historian käytöstä on tullut merkittävä piirre Vladimir Putinin johtaman Venäjän ulkopolitiikassa. Viimeistään Krimin miehityksestä ja Itä-Ukrainan sodasta (2014) lähtien virallinen Venäjä on pyrkinyt rakentamaan Ukrainasta kuvaa epäitsenäisenä toimijana, joka on historiallinen ja luonnollinen osa Venäjää. Erityisesti presidentti Putin on aktiivisesti kommentoinut Ukrainan ja Venäjän yhteistä historiaa. Yksityisen kommentaattorin sijasta Putin on nostanut itsensä ylimmäksi historiantulkitsijaksi, sillä toisin kuin ammattimaisilla historiantutkijoilla, hänen näkemyksensä leviävät valtion mediamonopolin kautta kaikkialle Venäjällä. Tässä artikkelissa käsitellään Putinin kesällä 2021 julkaisemaa laajaa esseetä, joka summaa Putinin näkemyksiä Ukrainan historiasta. Artikkeli pyrkii purkamaan Putinin ajattelun takana vaikuttavia tekijöitä. Historiakäsitysten takana on useita eri tekijöitä, jotka näyttäisivät heijastelevan laajempaa venäläisen historiankirjoituksen perinnettä. Putinin esseessä on mukana myös käsitteitä, joiden avulla hän pyrkii osoittamaan Ukrainan olevan luonnollinen osa Venäjää. Käsitteiden ohella keskeiseksi teemaksi Putinin esseessä nousee faktapohjaisuuden korostaminen, jonka avulla eriävät näkemykset pyritään jo ennalta osoittamaan vääriksi. The use of history has become an important feature in foreign politics of Russia led by Vladimir Putin. At least since the occupation of Crimea and the war in East Ukraine (2014) the official Russia has begun to frame Ukraine as an artificial creation and dependent actor that is historically and naturally part of Russia. President Putin has actively commented on what he sees as shared history of Ukraine and Russia. Instead of being a private commentator, Putin has become the supreme interpreter of history in Russia. Unlike professional historians, Putin's interpretations spread throughout Russia via state media monopoly. This article aims to unravel factors behind Putin's thinking. His conception of history would seem to rely heavily on a broader tradition of Russian historiography dating from the 19th Century. His essay also contains particular concepts that Putin uses in an attempt to point out Ukraine as a natural part of Russia. Together with these concepts Putin's essay underlines factuality – even when the facts are only partially correct – to disprove contrary views in advance.

As epitomized by the invasion of Ukraine, the lasting geopolitical power struggle between the West and the rising nations, including Russia, has been dragging the international system towards polarization again. Its epicenter lies in the contest over the meaning of modernity that becomes particularly evident in the antagonistic attitudes towards sexual rights. Linking sexual rights to modernity has been counteracted by the discourse on traditional values. This article aims to critically examine Russia’s advocacy of traditional values in the geopolitical context. Built on the tripartite of cultural authenticity, sovereignty, and anti-Westernism, the discourse of traditional values conveys the resistance to the imposition of liberal values regarding gender equality and sexual diversity as the constitutive parameters of modernity. The investigation extends beyond a simplistic unipolar or bipolar worldview and argues that Russia’s stance is not merely counter-hegemonic against the West but also serves its imperialist aims as evidenced by its invasion of Ukraine.
