The employment of an earth-to-air heat exchanger as pre-treating unit of an air conditioning system for energy saving: A comparison among different worldwide climatic zones

Abstract: Highlights Earth-to-Air Heat eXchanger uses geothermal energy for air conditioning systems. A 2D mathematical model of the EAHX is developed to obtain the system performance. A case study office building is analysed for eight worldwide localities. Air temperature variation along the EAHX and EAHX efficiency are calculated. Reduction of thermal capacity of the coils inside air handling unit is evaluated.

“…In this paper, the EAHX is intended to be installed in the city of Naples (Italy), which has a typical Mediterranean climate. The study is conducted by means of a numerical two-dimensional model based on finite element method and experimentally validated [47]. The step of the investigation concerning the optimization of geometrical factors of the duct and air velocity is conducted by imposing the design parameters for cooling and heating operation modes prescribed by ASHRAE.…”

“…Therefore, never as in this historic moment has it been so necessary to find ecocompatible refrigeration techniques that constitute a valid alternative to vapor compression refrigeration systems; so the scientific community has been called upon to research for finding new solutions, using renewable energy sources [17][18][19][20][21] or developing completely new-concept technologies (Not-In-Kind) for cooling and air conditioning [22][23][24]. Among them is the class of solid-state technologies based on caloric effects [25] which is currently considered a promising alternative to vapor compression [26,27] as it is characterized by the use of materials that have not a direct greenhouse effect (GWP = 0) [28].…”
