The empathy continuum: An evidenced‐based teaching model derived from an integrative review of contemporary nursing literature

Abstract: Aims This paper has two aims : first, to explain the concept of empathy derived from an integrative review of contemporary nursing literature; and second, to profile a new conceptual model that can be used to inform the teaching of empathy. Background Empathy is fundamental to therapeutic communication and integral to quality patient care. However, the lack of agreement on the definition or conceptualisation of empathy in the nursing literature can make teaching and evaluating this skill challenging and incons… Show more

“…Over time, this definition has evolved and is now considered a multifaceted construct, including affective, cognitive and behavioural elements (Levett‐Jones et al., 2018). Empathy is perceived as a personal trait, therapeutic tool, professional state, communication process and even on a continuum (Levett‐Jones & Cant, 2020; Yu & Kirk, 2008). “…In addition, the power of the arts in HPE to facilitate rich learning experiences, including engagement, meaning‐making and translational education strategies, 9 is highlighted. Co‐designing HPE with consumers warrants further exploration, especially in its capacity to provoke reflection and empathetic behaviours in clinical practice which Levett‐Jones and Cant 53 describe as the responding stage on the empathy continuum. Furthermore, co‐design research approaches that partner and legitimise health care consumers as experts by experience may help better align education and health professional practice with consumers’ actual needs, an important first step in transforming hierarchical health care relationships towards more humanistic model of care.…”

“…In previous studies, empathy is divided into cognitive empathy and affective empathy, which is mostly applied in the research of prosocial behavior, emotion recognition, nursing, etc. ( Juhl et al, 2020 ; Levett-Jones and Cant, 2020 ; Brett and Maybery, 2021 ). This study has combined empathy and ecology to broaden the concepts of empathy marketing and green marketing and divide empathy marketing into ecological empathy marketing and consumer empathy marketing to enable the consumers to empathize with the environment and the enterprises with an aim to strengthen the coordination between ecological protection and consumption upgrading and expand the international marketing of marine aquatic products.…”
