Objective: This study was carried out to develop an instrument to measure the emotional well-being of mothers in line with the Deck-Chair theory of Jean Ball. Design: Scale development and psychometric testing study. Setting: Turkey Population or Sample: A total of 398 postpartum women were included. Methods: MEWBS was administered to postpartum women being prepared for discharge (n=398). Factor analyses were carried out to determine the construct validity of the scale. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to assess the reliability of the scale. Main Outcome Measures: MEWBS is a valid and reliable scale. Results: KMO value for EFA was found to be 0.806. As a result of the factor analysis that was carried out with the varimax orthogonal rotation technique, three factors explaining 51.825% of the total variance in the measured characteristic (Healthcare and Education, Social Support, and Mother’s Personality and Experiences) were identified. The internal consistency coefficient of the scale revealed that it was highly reliable (Cronbach’s alpha=0.860). It was determined that the scale did not have response bias (Hotelling’s T =397.260, p=0.000), and its factors were additive (non-additivity: 0.000). Conclusion: The validity and reliability test results of MEWBS demonstrated that it is a valid and reliable measurement instrument to assess the emotional well-being of postpartum mothers being prepared for discharge. MEWBS can guide healthcare professionals in identifying the emotional well-being of mothers in line with Jean Ball’s deck-chair theory and providing care accordingly. Therefore, healthcare professionals are advised to use MEWBS in their routine practices and assessments of mothers.

Latar Belakang: Stres pada kehamilan berpotensi menyebabkan berat badan lahir rendah dan lingkar kepala kecil. Stres selama ibu hamil akan berpengaruh pada perkembangan neurobehavioral. Edukasi kesehatan mental pada periode antenatal sangat diperlukan untuk menjaga kesehatan mental selama masa kehamilan. Objektif: Membuktikan efektivitas pemberian edukasi berbasis kesehatan mental ibu dengan menggunakan pendekatan teori Jean Ball terhadap efikasi diri, dan stres ibu dalam menghadapi proses persalinan normal. Metode: Penelitian ini menggunakan desain one-group pre-test and post-test design (satu kelompok pengukuran sebelum dan sesudah intervensi). Ibu hamil diberikan pelatihan dan edukasi Maternal Mental Health (MMH) dengan pendekatan pemberdayaan keluarga (utamanya pasangan/suami) terhadap efikasi diri dan stres ibu hamil serta buku kesehatan ibu dan anak. Penelitian ini menggunakan instrument berupa kuesioner Child-birth Self-Efficacy (CBSE) versi Bahasa Indonesia (a-Cronbach 0.94) dan The Revised Prenatal Distress Questionnaire (NuPDQ) versi Bahasa Indonesia (a-Cronbach 0.73). Analisis variabel menggunakan uji paired T-test. Hasil: Studi menemukan hasil analisis efikasi diri dan stres partisipan setelah pemberian edukasi, latihan dan pemberdayaan keluarga yang signfikan (p < .05). Kesimpulan: Edukasi Maternal Mental Health (MMH) bertahap dengan pendekatan stres dan efikasi diri serta pemberdayaan pasangan/keluarga berdampak terhadap peningkatan efikasi diri yang baik, dan penurunan respon stres pada ibu hamil.

Postpartum Excessive Social Support Scale: A Scale Development and Psychometric Testing Study

Introduction: In Turkey and other collectivist cultures, child-rearing is a communal effort provided by multiple family members, especially female relatives such as mothers-in-law, aunts, and sisters. Environments with excessively controlling social factors can adversely affect their maternal roles. This study was conducted to develop a measurement tool for determining postpartum excessive social support. Methods: This is a scale development and psychometric evaluation study. In the study, a draft of the Postpartum Excessive Social Support Scale (PESSS) was created, subsequently submitted to expert opinion, and administered to mothers in the postpartum period of 1 to 6 weeks online between March and December 2023 ( n = 440). A factor analysis (including explanatory factor analysis [EFA] and confirmatory factor analysis) was conducted to determine the construct validity of the scale, while Cronbach’s alpha was examined to establish its reliability. Response bias (Hotelling T2) and additivity (Tukey’s test of additivity) of the scale were also determined in the study. Results: For the content validity of the scale, 10 experts from the field of midwifery were consulted (content validity index [CVI] = 0.80). As a result of the EFA, Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin value was found as 0.916. Through factor analysis using the direct oblimin rotation technique, a four-factor structure was identified for the scale, explaining 64.197% of the total variance (social pressure, effect of environmental factors on paternal role, effect of environmental factors on maternal role, and barriers in mother–infant interaction). The internal reliability coefficient of the scale was highly reliable (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.936). There was no response bias in the scale (Hotelling’s T2 = 433.558, p < .001) and it was additive (Tukey’s Non-additivity = 0.000, p < .001). Discussion: The PESSS is a 20-item scale measuring excessive social support between 1 and 6 weeks postpartum. The PESSS serves as a guiding tool for health care professionals to identify excessive environmental pressure hindering mothers’ maternal role and to provide care accordingly. In this context, health care professionals can readily utilize the PESSS in routine postpartum assessments for mothers.
