The contemporary study of adolescent development emphasizes that the process of development involves mutually influential relations between the developing individual and the features of his or her complex and changing context. These relations are most often framed by models derived from a relational developmental systems metatheory, an approach to theory that is entirely consistent with the seven principles of life course health development. Concepts associated with these ideas are used to describe, explain, and optimize the course of development in the second decade of life and, as such, to frame applied research aimed at promoting health and positive development among diverse adolescents. Accordingly we discuss the relational developmental systems metatheory and the seven principles and illustrate how the ideas associated with both approaches to adolescent development can innovatively integrate and extend scholarship about transitions and transformations characterizing the adolescent period and, as well, afford optimism that relational changes linked to positive change in the health developmental system can be identified and used to promote thriving in adolescence.

Research Network (LCRN) and charged it with creating a new infrastructure for catalyzing progress and enhancing funding to support basic, theoretical, applied, and translational life course health development research of relevance to practice and policy. In addition to undertaking a variety of other activities and projects aimed at advancing the emerging field, the LCRN initiated an inclusive agendasetting process that resulted in the Handbook of Life Course Health Development, including this chapter and the research agenda it contains. Nature Connection Changes Throughout the Life Span: Generation and Sex‐Based Differences in Ecowellness

We investigated whether ecowellness significantly differed based on participants' generation status (i.e., millennial, Generation X, and combined baby boom/silent generation) and biological sex using a 2 × 3 analysis of variance. A statistically significant interaction suggested that millennial men in the sample had lower levels of ecowellness compared with millennial women, a pattern in biological sex that held for individuals in the combined baby boom/silent generation group. In contrast, male Generation X participants had higher ecowellness levels compared with their female counterparts. Results are described through a life course health development perspective, and implications for professional counseling and future research are discussed.
