The emergence of music from the Theory of Mind

Abstract: It is commonly argued that music originated in human evolution as an adaptation to selective pressures. In this paper we present an alternative account in which music originated from a more general adaptation known as a Theory of Mind (ToM). ToM allows an individual to recognise the mental and emotional state of conspecifics, and is pivotal in the cultural transmission of knowledge. We propose that a specific form of ToM, Affective Engagement, provides the foundation for the emergence of music. Underpinned by … Show more

“…The most studied field is the induction of positive emotional states through music, which has been tested with some success in various mental health conditions like depression [18]. Emotional responses to music are born of different musical features, including mode, harmonic complexity, tempo and intensity [19]. On the other hand, one of the most used set of stimuli in experimental research on emotions is the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) The IAPS is a collection of more than 1000 colour photographs that represent objects, people, landscapes and everyday situations.…”

“…Theory of mind is central to social life as it allows individuals not only to "read the minds of others", but also to interpret their intentions (Goldstein, 2010). Livingstone andThompson (2009/2010) suggested a close knit between music and ToM. They theorized that music emerged from a specific form of ToM known as affective engagement or "the degree of emotional connectedness between two or more individuals for the exchange of affective state used in the construction of mental models of conspecific emotion" (p. 85).…”
