The Five Star Movement (M5S) formed the Eurosceptic EFDD Group when it first elected its members in the European Parliament (EP) in 2014. Two and a half years later, the M5S sought, without success, to leave the Eurosceptics and join the Liberal group. This attempted change of transnational affiliation is puzzling: why has the M5S tried to leave the Eurosceptic group to ally with the most Europhile group in the EP? How could this U-turn be explained? Relying on several different data -the EUANDI party dataset, official EP data, and original interviews with members of the EP -this article provides a systematic answer to these questions. We test three general hypotheses on group membership in the EP, using the M5S as a case-study. We show that neither policy congruence nor the pursuit of office fully explain the M5S's observed or attempted alliances. We suggest, instead, that 'domestic politics' is the key driver of the M5S's behaviour in the EP. Political group membership is functional to the Movement's strategic objectives at home. This article shows that national-level explanations of transnational affiliation need to be given more consideration, and highlights the 'second order' importance of the EU arena with respect to 'first order' national strategic objectives.

The article focuses on the party political spaces in four Southern European countries (i.e. Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain) since the onset of the Euro crisis. To understand the emerging conflict structures, it argues for the need to consider that these countries simultaneously face an economic crisis and a political crisis and that both crises have strong domestic and European components. Moreover, the major driving forces of change tend to be social movements and political parties that forcefully combine opposition to austerity and to "old politics." This leads to a complex conflict structure shaped by struggles over austerity and political renewal. In this structure, divides over economic and political issues are closely aligned with each other. While this pattern emerges everywhere, there are distinct country differences. Empirically, the article relies on original data from a large-scale content analysis of national election campaigns in the four countries in the period 2011 to 2015.

Cet article s'interroge sur les effets du changement des modalités de la compétition électorale sur le niveau de disproportionnalité enregistré dans un type bien particulier de système électoral mixte : le système proportionnel avec bonus majoritaire. Il s'intéresse aux cas français et italien à partir des trois dernières élections régionales qui ont eu lieu dans ces deux pays. Les deux systèmes partagent des caractéristiques importantes : ils utilisent un système proportionnel avec bonus et présentent tous les deux des systèmes partisans dans lesquels un troisième pôle électoral fort refusant toute alliance électorale a récemment émergé ou s'est considérablement renforcé, dans un contexte auparavant caractérisé par un bipolarisme fragmenté. À partir de la simulation de plusieurs scénarios de répartition des voix, de l'étude de statistiques descriptives et de régressions linéaires, l'article montre que la fragmentation en plusieurs pôles et le caractère plus ou moins serré de la compétition électorale contribuent de manière très significative au niveau de disproportionnalité enregistré. Plus largement, ce niveau croissant de disproportionnalité pose des questions importantes sur la qualité de la représentation en France et en Italie.
