The elevated NLR, PLR and PLT may predict the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Recently, several studies have reported that inflammatory response and elevated platelet counts may be associated with the poor prognosis of colorectal cancer. This meta-analysis was designed to analyze and evaluate the prognostic role of elevated preoperative or pretreatment neutrophils-to-lymphocytes ratio, platelet-to-lymphocytes ratio or platelet counts in patients with colorectal cancer. We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library and Web of Science to April, 2016. A total of 23 studies (N = 11762 partic… Show more

“…The role of NLR has been studied in other cancers, including colorectal, ovarian, breast, pancreatic, urothelial, and renal cell cancers, myeloma, and others [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. The results of our pooled analysis are in agreement with results from these abovementioned studies on other cancers.…”

“…Furthermore, in various cancers [7], an elevated NLR is considered as a poor prognostic factor. NLR is an important factor that influence prognosis in ovarian, colorectal, breast, pancreatic, urothelial, renal cell cancers, and myeloma patients [8][9][10][11][12][13][14]. Recently, elevated NLR was reported to be correlated with poor prognosis in patients with gliomas in several studies.…”

“…Systemic inflammation plays a key role in tumor development and progression . Inflammatory markers such as the circulating neutrophil‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet‐to‐lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte‐to‐monocyte ratio (LMR), and C‐reactive protein level are used as predictive markers for various tumors . These inflammation markers are not only easy to acquire; they also have strong predictive value with oncologic patients .…”

“…In recent years, it is emphasized that NLR and PLR are important markers in various types of cancer (30). NLR and PLR are also associated with thyroid cancers in many studies.…”
