The Electronic Spectrum of the CrO Ion in the Ca2SiO4 · CaCl2 Host Lattice

Abstract: The polarised absorption spectrum of single crystals of Ca,SiO, + CaCI, containing chromium as CrOk or Crop is measured at 4.2 K in the range 8000 to 46000 cm-*. By a careful analysis based on a T, -D2d site symmetry perturbation and on the band polarisation behaviour, i t is concluded t h a t the observed spectrum is due to CrO:, the ground state is 2Ezz and the system of bands in the region 10000 to 20000 cm-l corresponds t o the ligandfield transition.
