Ammoniak und Fluor reagieren erst ab Temperaturen von –120 bis –110°C miteinander. Die Reaktion ist dann heftig und nicht moderierbar. Reaktionsprodukte werden vor allem durch NMR‐ und Massenspektrometrie identifiziert. Es bilden sich neben Ammoniumfluorid Difluoramin als Hauptprodukt, Stickstofftrifluorid, Tetrafluorhydrazin, Difluordiazin und Stickstoff. Fluoramin kann nicht direkt nachgewiesen werden. Es wird gezeigt, daß Ammoniak und Fluor auch bai tiefer Temperatur nur im Gaszustand miteinander reagieren können. Voraussetzung ist hierfür ein genügend hoher Ammoniakpartialdruck, der erst ab der genannten Temperatur erreicht wird. Daraus, aus der Metastabilität des Systems, aus der Zersetzung zu Stickstoff und aus dem sporadischen Auftreten von Hydrazin wird auf Fluoramin als reaktive Zwischenverbindung geschlossen, welche prinzipiell aus diesem Reaktionssystem nicht isolierbar ist.
