The electron impact and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry of aziridines and their 2-chloroethylamine precursors

Abstract: A mass spectrometric method for the analysis of aziridines and their 2-chloroethylamine precursors is described. These compounds are characterized by their highly labile interconvertible nature. The capabilities of electron impact and fast atom bombardment (FAB) mass spectrometry as ionizaton techniques for structure confirmation studies were explored. A new technique using FAB mass spectrometry to distinguish between an aziridine and its open-chain precursor is described. INTRODUCTIONDuring an investigation o… Show more

“…This prevents the detection of the molecular radical cations and hence the determination of the molecular weights (M w ) of the analytes. 9 Tandem mass spectrometry (MS 2 ) based on collisionactivated dissociation (CAD) is a powerful method for the identification of many unknown ionized analytes in complex mixtures. 10,11 However, isomer differentiation is challenging as many ionized isomers fragment in a similar manner.…”

“…However, the EI method often causes extensive fragmentation to the molecular radical cations of the analytes, especially for aziridines, which produce [M – H] + ions instead of molecular radical cations upon EI. This prevents the detection of the molecular radical cations and hence the determination of the molecular weights ( M w ) of the analytes …”
