The “Elderly” Lesson in a “Stressful” Life: Italian Holistic Approach to Increase COVID-19 Prevention and Awareness

Abstract: It's a frightening time due to COVID-19, but the great elderly/centenarians, apparently with more frailty, seem to have a better response to the pandemic. "The South Italy" lifestyle seems an "effective strategy" promoting the well-being embedded in a holistic solution: healthy diet, less exposure to PM10 pollution, protected environment, and moderate physical activity. The European FP7 Project RISTOMED results, since 2010, have shown that dietary intervention improved a heathy status in the elderly people. Ba… Show more

“…Just because of its widely demonstrated beneficial role on these risk factors [ 9 ], it would be worth recommending a high-quality dietary pattern such as the Mediterranean diet. However, some authors already have pointed out that there is a strong rationale for expecting a protective effect of the Mediterranean diet on COVID-19 [ [10] , [11] , [12] , [13] , [14] ].…”

“…A lower rate of COVID-19 deaths in the elderly aged over 90 years has also been reported in Italy confirming the resilience of this population in fighting against Covid-19 disease. A North to South decreasing gradient in the percentage of > 90 being infected has been also reported (6-8% in northern regions, and 1-4% in southern regions) [11]. Genetic and epigenetic factors, a long-life adherence to Mediterranean diet as well as living in less polluted areas have been implicated to explain these observations.…”

“…Indeed, for most viral infections, the outcome can vary widely depending on viral factors or host features, including the structure of the virus (RNA virus versus DNA), the viral load, the site of entry in the host, the infected cell types and viral immune-evasion strategies. Many modifiable factors potentially impacting host immune defenses have also been reported, including sleep [3], nutritional status, microbiota and even psychophysical factors (Figure 2) [4,5]. Among non-modifiable factors, age and genetic susceptibility might be considered the most important.…”
