The Efficacy of Geraniol and ß‐Citronellol against Freshwater and Marine Monogeneans

Abstract: Monogeneans are parasitic flatworms that may be a threat for finfish aquaculture. In this study, the anthelmintic activity of two terpenes, geraniol and β‐citronellol, was tested in vitro against ancyrocephalin and diplectanid monogeneans. Experiments were performed in both water and a culture medium. We observed that monogeneans in culture medium may be more tolerant to treatments compared with bioassays performed only in water. Concentrations of 300 mg/L of both compounds were required to kill 100% of monoge… Show more

“…Ingram et al [ 67 ] reported that cercarial elastase in S. mansoni (a S01C family member) is essential for host skin penetration and that the expansion of this group of peptidases may imply the acquisition of new functions related to host invasion. Future experimental studies are required to investigate the role of the S01C peptidases identified in this study, during infection by species such as R. viridisi , G. salaris , N. melleni , and E. nipponicum [ 94 , 95 , 96 ].…”

“…In addition, β-citronellol-containing essential oils have an anesthetic effect (Toni et al, 2014) and anthelmintic activity (Hierro et al, 2004;Barros et al, 2009) on fish that do not disrupt the metabolic ion regulation. Nevertheless, Morales-Serna et al (2020) do not recommend the use of β-citronellol as anti-monogenean in fish, since it is impractical. Moreover, citronellol has anti-carcinogenic effects and decreases leukopenia and neutropenia (Zhuang et al, 2009).…”

“…Approximately 50 hatchery‐reared fish were infected with diplectanid monogeneans. The infection method consisted of introducing monogenean eggs into the fish tank, as described by Morales‐Serna et al (2020). These eggs were collected from another tank containing wild fish ( C. viridis ) caught off Mazatlán.…”
