The Efficacy of Energy-Restricted Diets in Achieving Preoperative Weight Loss for Bariatric Patients: a Systematic Review

Abstract: In bariatric practice, a preoperative weight loss of at least 5% is recommended. However, the hypocaloric diets prescribed vary and no consensus exists. This study examined the efficacy of preoperative diets in achieving 5% weight loss. From a systematic literature search, eight randomised controlled trials (n = 862) were identified. Half of the trials used a "very-low-calorie diet" whilst the rest employed a "low-calorie diet". Only five diets achieved ≥ 5% weight loss over varying durations and energy intake… Show more

“…These temporal trends indicate that surveillance and prophylactic efforts against anemia should commence earlier for patients undergoing OAGB or LRYGB than those undergoing LSG, preferably within the first 3 months or even before the procedure. 40,41 This study also represents one of the first reports to delineate the interactions among sex, follow-up time, and nutritional outcomes after bariatric intervention. A novel finding is that among women, hemoglobin levels continued to decline in a strongly monotonic fashion during follow-up, whereas such a monotonically decreasing trend was not observed among men, thus indicating that nutritional support for women who underwent bariatric procedures was inadequate compared with support for men.…”

“…Both LCD and VLCD induce weight loss and result in liver volume reduction[ 277 , 278 ]. The meta-analysis by Naseer et al [ 279 ] included four RCTs using VLCD and four other employing LCD. The authors inferred that the likelihood of achieving 5% weight loss was highest with a three week 700-1050 kcal diet, comprising of moderate carbohydrate, high protein and low or moderate fat.…”
