The efficacy of bromfenac ophthalmic solution 0.07% dosed once daily in achieving zero-to-trace anterior chamber cell severity following cataract surgery

Abstract: PurposeTo evaluate the efficacy of bromfenac ophthalmic solution 0.07% dosed once daily in achieving zero-to-trace (0–5 cells) anterior chamber cells, following cataract surgery with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation.MethodsThe study designed employed two Phase III, double-masked, placebo-controlled, multicenter clinical trials of 440 subjects, randomized to either bromfenac ophthalmic solution 0.07% (n=222) or placebo (n=218). Subjects self-dosed once daily, beginning 1 day before undergoing cat… Show more

“…These results confirm that from the first day of instillation of bromfenac there is a potent effect inhibiting COX-2 and reducing the pain. Similar to other authors’ findings, 26 28 the signs of ocular inflammation (hyperemia, flare, cellularity, and chemosis) disappeared at the end of the intervention, even though the bromfenac concentration seemed to be low when compared to nepafenac.…”

“…However, eyes receiving nonpreserved dexamethasone had a significantly higher mean AC cells score within this low grade (0.28 versus 0.07, p = 0.013). Clinically, this difference may be regarded as irrelevant because zero-to-trace (+ 0.5) anterior chamber cells are used in other clinical trials as one category for inflammation control following cataract surgery 27 . A possible explanation for slightly better inflammation control in the PD group is that dexamethasone suspension penetrates the cornea better than water solution.…”
