The Efficacy and Safety of Acupuncture for Prophylaxis of Vestibular Migraine: A Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Introduction: With a high incidence rate and low diagnosis rate, vestibular migraine (VM) can seriously affect the quality of life of patients, but it remains difficult to manage by current treatment options. Acupuncture may be a potential treatment option for VM prophylaxis, but the currently available evidence is still uncertain. Therefore, this trial aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for VM prophylaxis. Methods: This is a 28-week parallel, randomized, controlled clinical trial including… Show more

“…Vestibular rehabilitation typically consists of four groups of exercises (gaze stability exercises, habituation exercises, gait and balance training, and walking to improve endurance), and some studies, albeit with low-quality evidence, suggest that it may be more effective than pharmacologic intervention [54,69]. Furthermore, some randomized controlled trials concerning alternative non-pharmacologic prophylaxis (e.g., acupuncture) are underway [70].…”

“…Two randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were excluded from this review as the comparator was incorrect -an intervention was not compared to placebo or no treatment, but was instead compared to another (potentially) active intervention. This included one study that compared acupuncture to venlafaxine (Hu 2021), and one that compared resistance exercise to relaxation therapy (Sun 2022). The exclusion of these studies may be regarded as a source of bias in the review, although it is in accordance with our protocol (Webster 2022c).…”
