The Efficacy and Safety of Olanzapine for the Treatment of Geriatric Psychosis

Abstract: Elderly psychiatric patients often present with psychotic symptoms that need antipsychotic treatment. Olanzapine is one of the atypical antipsychotics with efficacy for psychotic symptoms and a safer side-effect profile than typical antipsychotics. This study was conducted to assess the efficacy and safety of olanzapine for treatment of geriatric psychosis. The sample population comprised 94 acute-ward patients who were 65 years of age or older. Clinical assessment was conducted at baseline and also at 4 weeks… Show more

“…Among long-term care residents with dementia who received low doses of risperidone or olanzapine, the incidence of adverse events was low . In elderly patients, body weight and fasting triglyceride and sugar level were significantly elevated after olanzapine treatment, but the conclusions are that olanzapine is efficacious for geriatric patients with psychosis and that the dosage should be diagnosis-dependent (Hwang et al 2003;Fontaine et al 2003;Schatz 2003). Brodaty et al (2003) reported an excess of cerebrovascular events and deaths among patients receiving risperidone.…”

“…In our study, the motives for attempted suicides in most cases were chiefly due to delusions and in some cases were comorbid with depression. In our previous studies, we have demonstrated that atypical antipsychotics, such as risperidone, olanzapine and quetiapine, are efficacious for demented patients with psychosis and the dosage is relatively low compared with that for other aged psychoses Hwang et al, 2003;Yang et al, 2005). In this study, both antidepressants and atypical antipsychotic were used for all seven cases.…”

“…One open-label trial reported several adverse events among elderly acute-ward patients subjected to olanzapine over a 4-week course [10]. The maximum dose in this trial was 20 mg/d and the mean daily dosage in the fourth week was 10.1 mg/d.…”
