The efficacy and safety of cannabidiol as adjunct treatment for drug‐resistant idiopathic epilepsy in 51 dogs: A double‐blinded crossover study

Aaron J. Rozental,
Brooke G. Weisbeck,
Isabella Corsato Alvarenga
et al.

Abstract: BackgroundApproximately 30% of dogs with idiopathic epilepsy (IE) are drug‐resistant. Recent studies have suggested cannabidiol (CBD) may be an effective anticonvulsant in dogs with IE.ObjectiveTo evaluate the addition of CBD to antiseizure drugs (ASDs) on seizure frequency and to report adverse events in dogs with drug‐resistant IE.AnimalsFifty‐one dogs. Dogs having at least 2 seizures per month while receiving at least 1 ASD were included in the trial.MethodsDouble‐blinded placebo‐controlled crossover study.… Show more

“…in PK parameters in each dose groups. CBD and THC plasma concentrations varied dramatically between individual cats in the same dose group, a finding observed in similar feline cannabinoid PK studies (5,11). Alternatively cats may simply have inherently high inter-individual variability (or intra-individual variability after multiple doses) in cannabinoid kinetics.…”

“…CBD has been gaining attention as a nutraceutical due to its ability to provide therapeutic benefits without impairing cognition. It has been recognized to effectively reduce seizure severity and frequency in children and young adults (3, 4) and appears promising for similar use in anticonvulsant-resistant epileptic animals (5). Furthermore, CBD has been demonstrated to have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties in models using canine and equine whole blood (6,7).…”
