The effects of woodfuel consumption in the ASAL areas of kenya: the case of marsabit forest

Abstract: In the arid and semiarid lands (ASAL) of Kenya, fuelwood and charcoal constitute 95–98% of the total energy demand for cooking, heating and lighting. The resultant deleterious ecological effects are severe and need urgent remedial interventions. A study was carried out in Marsabit District, which is a vast ASAL region, to examine the effects of woodfuel consumption on Marsabit Forest and the surrounding areas. It was found that wood for fuel harvested from Marsabit Forest was approximately 56,000 tons y−1. The… Show more

“…They claim access to the reserve and perceived being denied where exploitation of natural resources allowed. The forest support livelihoods and evidenced by mean capital fuel consumption of 1500 kgy -1 required by the household in the study area (Kirubi et al 2000). This may be estimated high but access is regulated through permits that restrict wood fuel consumption patterns.…”

“…Rapid population growth and change in local community values of wildlife as a resource, shift in land uses, attitudes and patterns of land ownership further make wildlife conservation unfeasible within and outside MNR (KWS 1994;Leitoro et al 1994;Kirubi et al 2000). The communities adjacent to MNR view wildlife as a liability and have negative attitudes towards it and the reserve.…”

“…Pasture woody weeds in arid and semi-arid lands are a source of woodfuel (Kirubi et al 2000;Burley 1982). Farmers in both divisions highly valued particular woody weeds as sources of firewood.…”

“…Tropical forests are not only disproportionately important in the world carbon budget (Clark et al 2001a), but are also very important as woodfuel sources in many developing countries (Schulte-Bisping et al 1999;Kirubi et al 2000;Heltberg et al 2000). To assess the sustainability of forest use for woodfuel, above ground forest biomass and its increment need to be examined in relation to woodfuel consumption.…”
