The Effects of Topical Agents of Fluticasone Propionate, Oxymetazoline, and 3% and 0.9% Sodium Chloride Solutions on Mucociliary Clearance in the Therapy of Acute Bacterial Rhinosinusitis In Vivo

Abstract: The oxymetazoline and 3% NaCl solution groups seemed to be more effective in mucociliary clearance, but there was no significant difference in improvement among the groups. The improvement of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis takes more than 3 weeks, according to the mucociliary clearance values of the groups.

“…Multiple studies have shown it to improve saccharin transit times in normal patients and those with ARS. 203,[206][207][208] Limited evidence also exists to suggest it improves symptoms and QoL for patients with ARS. 15,209 A number of systematic reviews and clinical guidelines on the subject of saline irrigation in ARS have been published and have found an overall benefit in symptom reduction (Table V-13).…”

“…İnanlı et al observed that fluticasone propionate administered topically for 3 weeks caused no improvement in MC in patients with acute sinusitis [5]. Similarly, Braat et al reported no decrease in ciliary cells in mucosal specimens taken from the anterior part of the concha and no statistically significant difference in MC values following 6-week administration of fluticasone propionate in patients with allergic rhinitis [9].…”

“…They also emphasized that care was required during the use of topical nasal decongestants [4]. İnanlı et al reported prolongation of MCT in patients with acute sinusitis, but observed that oxymetazoline significantly shortened MCT [5]. Van de Donk et al reported that oxymetazoline and xylometazoline reduced the ciliary beat frequency in the mucosa of the sphenoid sinus but did not alter MCT [6].…”
