“…Although vitamin E is mainly known for its antioxidant function, there is growing evidence that vitamin E interacts with several regulatory proteins, thereby modulating signaling pathways as well as gene expression (reviewed by Rimbach et al in [ 187 , 188 , 189 ]). Clinical trials studying the pharmacological effects of high-dose vitamin E supplementation on diseases with inflammation as an underlying mechanism, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and cancer, have not been convincing, since some trials produced results suggesting that vitamin E has no pharmacological benefit on health or may even increase the risk for chronic diseases and mortality [ 33 , 41 , 188 , 190 , 191 , 192 , 193 ]. Such unexpected results indicate that there may be mechanisms underlying the biological activities as well as the metabolism of vitamin E, which are not fully understood yet.…”
