Environmental regulation and green innovation are two main fulcrums in the realization of green transition of industrial growth. However, few studies have done an empirical analysis of the impact of environmental regulation and green innovation on green development. Based on the theory of systematic interduality, regional industrial green development is regarded as a dynamic system composed of two subsystems: the state and the process subsystem. Using provincial industrial panel data from 2007-2015 and the spatial Durbin model under the unified analysis framework, this paper examines the role and mechanism of environmental regulation (divided into administrative environmental regulation, market-based environmental regulation, and public participation environmental regulation) in the impact of green innovation (divided into green product innovation and green craft innovation) on industrial green development. The results indicate a sharp fluctuating trend in China's overall industrial green development performance, and that China's 30 provinces can be divided into four categories, based on the development levels of two subsystems of industrial green development. There is a clear positive spatial correlation between the industrial green development performance in different provinces. Considering the impact of environmental regulation on industrial green development performance, different types of environmental regulation have different regional influences. Considering the impact of green innovation on industrial green development performance, in the absence of environmental regulation constraints, green product innovation shows a certain promotional role, and green craft innovation has a significant inhibitory effect. However, under environmental regulation constraints, market-based environmental regulation through the encouragement of green craft innovation rather than green product innovation achieves a positive impact on industrial green development.

Board Composition and Corporate Social Responsibility Performance: Evidence from Chinese Public Firms

This study investigates the relationship between board composition and corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance. Specifically, we examine the impact of board composition (aspects like political experience, academic experience, overseas background, and gender diversity) on CSR performance. We test our hypotheses using data collected from 839 Chinese public firms during the period from 2008 to 2016. Applying generalized least squares regression, the study shows that the political experience, academic experience, and overseas background of the board members are positively related to the firm's CSR performance. Moreover, we discuss the distinctive relationship between gender diversity and CSR performance in the context of Chinese culture. We extend the CSR literature by examining unique aspects of board composition in the Chinese context and offer fruitful implications for both scholars and practitioners.

This paper adopts the slacks-based measure-directional distance function (SBM-DDF, 2009) method for deriving the "Green Innovation Growth" rates of 28 manufacturing industries in China. The results indicate that the overall level of green innovation growth in China's manufacturing is relatively low, with a declining trend. The tradeoffs among energy, environment and economy are rather sharp, and the "Porter Effect (1995)" (environmental regulation will promote green technology innovation) is not currently realized quickly in manufacturing. These evaluations imply an unsustainable development model in China, with significant differences among industries. By using a dynamic panel threshold model and employing an industry-level panel dataset for 2008-2014, we show that external knowledge sourcing has a significant negative impact on green innovation growth but with different constraints on R&D levels among industries. With the strengthening of R&D levels, gradually surpassing "critical mass", the negative role of external knowledge sourcing in driving this mechanism becomes smaller and smaller; it has a non-linear relationship with the "threshold effect". Consequently, we provide insights into the relationship among energy consumption, environmental pollution and technology innovation, and show how the heterogeneity of the R&D threshold affects differences in external knowledge sourcing and green innovation growth. These insights lead to a better understanding of the driving force, realizing path and policy design for green innovation growth.
